An ITW Business, Illinois Tool Works
ITW Heartland Implementing Green IT with SAN
December 2008 – In accordance with ITW Heartland’s 14001 registration and corresponding Environmental Policy, ITW Heartland continues to implement new processes and technology to “reduce, reuse, recycle, and comply”. ITW Heartland recently purchased a SAN (storage area network) to replace a legacy server to save energy costs and minimize the physical hardware and the hazardous materials associated with that system. The decision will lead to lower hardware costs in the future and reduce time for server administration.
Modern information systems rely upon a complex mix of people, networks and hardware; as such, a green computing initiative involves using computer resources to address increasingly sophisticated problems, with a low impact approach. The goals are similar to green chemistry; reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during the product's lifetime, and promote recyclability or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste.
In addition to "going green", the change also meets the need outlined in ITW Heartland’s Disaster Recovery Plan, allowing for immediate failover of applications and files to provide uninterrupted service to ITW customers.
