Over 35 years ago, ITW Heartland developed the gear burnishing process: a high speed process that
reduces nicks, burrs, and heat treat scale.
How do we do it? Using an A, B, and C die, ITW Heartland’s process is designed to remove or reduce gear tooth nicks and burrs, along with improving the surface finish of the tooth’s active profile. Each of the three different profile dies operates on its own heavy duty spindle in a triangular configuration. The action of the burnishing dies on the tooth surface allows the machine to accomplish these quality improvements without altering the tooth profile or lead. The “arborless” system meshes the workpiece gear under pressure between the three burnishing dies.
Our spiral shear burnishing is even more efficient at reducing nicks and burrs by eliminating oscillation and extending longevity of gears.
